How to Become a Life Coach
Is it time you’re FIRED UP and became a life coach?
Do you know that you have a gift of connecting with people and enabling them to feel supported and valued?
The definition of a strength (aka your gift) is natural talent supplemented with an effort to create a strength. At FIRE UP we know how to teach you the additional knowledge and skills to nurture your natural ability into a strength. We teach you how to become the best version of yourself in order to then be an empowering life coach to others.
What is a Life Coach?
Firstly it is probably important to think about what actually is a life coach? The International Coach Federation is the globally recognized professional body for coaches. They define coaching as follows:
‘Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches’ help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.
Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customise their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach’s job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has’. (http://www.coachfederation.org/ICF/)
Life coaching is not about someone else taking over and directing your life. In fact, it is quite the opposite. It is about having a trusted person working with you to support you in being the designer and director of your own destiny. It may sound cliché but it really works.
FIREUP has worked with thousands of people over the past 20 years and watched them succeed in ways they had only dreamed of before.
Why Become a Life Coach?
Becoming a life coach is a rewarding and fulfilling career. To be successful as a life coach, however, you need to stand out amongst the millions of people proclaiming to be life coaches. You need to have a clear point of difference and be credible. Credibility comes from having nationally and internationally recognised qualifications.
We have an amazing accredited life coaching course that is not only a truly fulfilling learning journey but will equip you to work in transformational ways with others. Whether you are helping them to clear out the blocks or build the vision, the FIRE UP training provides you with a wonderful kitbag of tools and techniques to teach you how to get the best out of each unique individual you work with.
We will teach you our fantastic REACH Model which is our foundational model for every coaching conversation. REACH is an acronym we have developed to help our coaches remember all the different aspects of how to have a coaching conversation and how to ‘reach’ people.
Life coaches will be working with people who need to make changes around all kinds of behaviors, whether it be diet, exercise, getting a new job, a new relationship or raising self-esteem. The more tools we have for supporting change when working as a life coach, the better.
REACH is one of our foundational tools.
This is the foundation for any conversation with others and if we do not take the time to establish it first we can miss having rich and productive conversations with others. Any kind of practitioner needs to be always aware of the old saying “People want to know how much you care before they care how much you know”. One of the challenges, when you work in a busy environment, is often taking the moment to stop and be really present with others but never underestimate the value of taking that initial moment to connect with someone. Think about someone who really makes you feel welcome each time you meet them. Notice how they build rapport and model their style.
Take the time to learn about powerful questioning techniques that really get to the heart of the matter. A book such as Lindsay Tighes “The Answer” is a good start The book has hundreds of great examples of questions that will truly help you to explore an issue thoroughly with someone. In any conversation with another person, one great question can be all it takes. For example, starting a conversation with a question such as “If you could change one thing today that would result in positive change in many other areas what would need to be different?”
Once you become a life coach, your job will be to help your clients get clear on the required action.
We teach you the techniques to allow people to leave you clear about the action they need to take? We teach you to set goals in powerful ways. When we work with clients we challenge them to think about the action they really need to take and make them accountable. For example, your client might be seeing lots of health professionals about issues around weight and not considered their exercise routine. Your questions may allow them to recognize that a daily walk would start them on the path to health. Until we involve people in planning their action they will continue to abdicate responsibility and keep up the excuses.
As a life coach, you question and challenge your client to dig deep into the why. What is the value of taking action and making a change? Clarify their values around the issue and link the change to those values. For example, a parent getting fitter who will have more energy to keep up with the kids.
The final part of any coaching conversation is to honor the person. At FIRE UP our training is based on positive validation of those we work with. We teach you the language to ensure your clients leave feeling they are capable. A great life coach gets constant word of mouth referrals because of the way they leave their clients feeling, and the results they help them achieve. A great life coach will encourage and validate their clients so that they feel better for having had this time with you. A great life coach will get them inspired by simple compliments such as “I know when you put your mind to things you can really achieve great things” Leave them feeling that you believe they can achieve anything they set their mind to.
REACH is a simple framework for having a coaching conversation and helps you in a busy environment to remember all the important components of a conversation. You never know the conversation you have with someone today could be one that starts that cycle of change for tomorrow.
Our Accredited Coaching Program to train life coaches also utilised the FIREUP framework.
